Nursing has historically been perceived as a female-dominated profession, yet gender disparities persist in nursing education and career advancement. While more men are entering the profession, they often face stereotypes, biases, and barriers to leadership roles. Conversely, women in nursing experience challenges related to work-life balance, career stagnation, and underrepresentation in higher academic and managerial positions (World Health Organization, 2024).
Research indicates that gender disparities in nursing stem from societal expectations, institutional policies, and workplace discrimination (Aliyu & Usman, 2023). In some cases, male nursing students and professionals report feelings of isolation and limited mentorship opportunities, while female nurses struggle with unequal pay and restricted career mobility (Bello et al., 2023).
In Bauchi State, gender dynamics in nursing education and career progression remain underexplored. Understanding these disparities is essential for promoting gender equity, improving educational policies, and ensuring equal opportunities for career advancement. This study seeks to appraise gender disparities in nursing education and career progression in Bauchi State.
Despite efforts to promote gender inclusivity, disparities persist in nursing education and career development. Male nursing students often face social stigma and challenges in securing mentorship, while female nurses encounter barriers in advancing to leadership roles (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
Studies suggest that these disparities may impact nursing workforce diversity, job satisfaction, and retention rates. However, limited research has examined gender-related challenges in nursing education and professional growth in Bauchi State. Without addressing these issues, gender biases may continue to hinder the development of a balanced and inclusive nursing workforce.
This study will focus on nursing students and professionals in selected institutions and healthcare facilities in Bauchi State. Limitations may include variations in gender perceptions across different cultural and institutional settings.
